When a human-centered design process starts with real clinical needs, it can make everyday dental work easier, safer and more intuitive.

That’s what helped the Solventum Filtek™ Composite Warmer earn a 2026 Red Dot Award for Product Design, regarded as one of the most prestigious international design competitions.

The device stands out for its clean, compact form, but the bigger story is how that design came to life. The team focused on a common challenge in restorative dentistry and built a solution that fits more naturally into the flow of care.

As Michael Vostal, principal industrial designer for Solventum Dental Solutions puts it, “Our clinicians are really focused on providing the best care to their patients.”

That focus helped shape a warmer designed not just to perform well, but to support dentists in the moments that matter most.

Solving a real challenge in restorative workflows

Dental restoratives help clinicians enhance the natural beauty of their patients’ smiles with ease and precision, from just a touch-up to a much more comprehensive restoration. While composite warming isn’t new, making it easy to use in practice has remained a challenge.

Project leader Bastian Kirchner explains that when composites are warmed before application, it can help improve handling1 and adaptation2. As he noted, it leads to “better flow, better adaptation.”

Those benefits matter in daily practice. But many available devices have created friction of their own. Kirchner points out that other options on the market are often “quite bulky, heavy and expensive.”

That reality gave the team a clear opportunity. If warming could be made simpler, faster and portable for point-of-care use, it could fit more naturally into clinical care. The result is a device that is small enough to fit in one hand and warms composites in as little as two minutes.

Designing with usability in mind

From the start, the goal wasn’t to make just another composite warmer. It was to create something that responded to what clinicians actually need.

Vostal described that process as listening closely, even beyond what customers say directly to address their unmet needs. “Sometimes what is said is just as important as what isn’t,” he shared. The feedback was clear. The team needed to find a solution that could improve workflows by reducing warming times, making set-up and use easier, support disinfection, and yet still feel intuitive from the first use.

The result is a device that reflects restraint and purpose. Instead of following the category norm of large, industrial-looking warmers, the Filtek Composite Warmer takes a cleaner, more refined approach. Its simple form, single-button interface and subtle visual feedback were all designed to reduce effort for busy users.

Vostal summed up that challenge this way: “Making something simple to use isn’t easy.” In this case, simplicity came from careful design choices that support confidence and ease at every step. And it’s a big reason why it won a Red Dot product design award.

A compact warmer built for the way clinicians work

The Filtek Composite Warmer combines performance with flexibility to better meet the requests of dental providers. It features a simplified user interface with one button, two icons and LED signals that appear only when needed. That keeps operation clear and straightforward, especially for first-time users.

The critical ingredient to this warmer is the composite itself. Solventum offers the first dental composite cleared by the FDA for warming.

After a 10-minute heat up, a capsule can be warmed in two minutes and a flowable syringe in five. The warmer can accommodate up to six capsules and one flowable syringe, ensuring there is sufficient capacity to warm multiple composites at the same time during procedures.

One of the most practical innovations is the removable holder so it can be taken directly to the point of care and a silicone sleeve to help protect users’ fingers from heat during handling. This flexibility helps support a smoother workflow. The removable part is also autoclavable, which enables easy device sterilization.

Every feature serves a purpose. Every element is designed to reduce friction and help clinicians stay focused on patient care.

Why this Red Dot recognition matters

The Red Dot Award recognizes product design that combines innovation, function and quality. For the Filtek Composite Warmer, that recognition reflects more than aesthetics. It highlights a thoughtful response to a real clinical need.

"Bringing innovative solutions to customers’ biggest challenges that impact dental treatments for people is what makes this recognition so meaningful,” Vostal explains.

When teams listen well, design carefully and stay focused on the people using the product, better solutions follow. This is how we solve.

Frequently asked questions about composite warming

What are the benefits of a composite warmer?
A composite warmer reduces the viscosity of dental restorative materials, helping improve flow3, enhance adaptation2 and decrease the extrusion force4 required during application.

When would a clinician benefit from warming a composite?
While some clinicians prefer warming for all composite cases, specific scenarios where warming is especially beneficial include injection techniques and small cavities or restorations where the improved flow and adaptation of the composite are particularly important.

How long does it take to warm composite?
The Solventum Filtek Composite Warmer requires an initial 10-minute heat-up. After that, it takes two minutes to warm a capsule and five minutes to warm a flowable syringe.

Is the composite warmer safe for regular clinical use?
Yes. It includes a heat-safe silicone sleeve to help protect users during handling. The removable top is also autoclavable to support hygiene and infection control.

How much composite can the device hold?
The device can warm up to six capsules and one flowable syringe at the same time.

What composites are indicated for warming with Filtek Composite Warmer?
Most Filtek dental composites in capsules and flowable syringes are indicated for warming up to 70°C/158°F. Always check Filtek instructions for use for warming indications, heating times and instructions.

How does composite warming fit into the direct restorative workflow?
The warmer includes a first-of-its-kind removable holder. Instead of forcing clinicians or assistants to walk back and forth to a stationary heating base, the holder can be brought directly to the chairside to streamline treatment.

When used in procedures with Filtek composites and Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesives, the Filtek Composite Warmer supports a streamlined restorative workflow.
