Surviving the unimaginable: Marcelo's burn recovery journey
June 25, 2026 | Read time: 5 min
A routine day at work changed everything for 33-year-old Marcelo. On May 5, 2020, an industrial accident left him with severe chemical burns covering more than 85% of his body. His odds of survival were remarkably low. But Marcelo refused to give up.
His remarkable journey to healing required immense personal resilience, the dedication of his medical team and advanced wound care technology. Today, Marcelo is back to living a normal life. His story highlights the profound intersection of human strength and medical technology like Solventum™ V.A.C.® Therapy. It shows us what is possible when healthcare professionals and patients have the right tools to fight for life.
A devastating accident and a fight to survive
Marcelo remembers every second of the accident. He was performing a routine activity at a factory tank when he opened a valve. A high-pressure release of chemicals suddenly ignited. The fire quickly consumed his clothes.
As he lay on the ground, his mind raced with thoughts of his family. He knew he had to act.
"Marcelo, you have to get up. If you don't get up, you're going to stay here, you're going to die in this place," he recalled.
He managed to reach the first aid room. Seeing the severe damage to his hands, he could only ask the staff to help him. Adrenaline masked the immediate physical pain as an ambulance rushed him to a local care unit in his native neighborhood of São Miguel Paulista.
The medical team soon transferred him to another hospital to receive specialized care. He lost consciousness later that night and the real battle for his life began.
Waking up to a new reality in the ICU
The initial prognosis was grim. The chemical fire caused extensive third-degree burns along with severe internal damage from inhalation.
"Chemical burns are particularly aggressive because the substances don't just cause immediate damage,” explained Dr. Dirceu Almeida, Marcelo’s surgeon. “They keep working, penetrating deeper into the tissue over the first hours and sometimes the first days,"
Seventeen days later, Marcelo woke up in the intensive care unit. His entire body was wrapped in bandages. He felt incredibly alone. The COVID-19 pandemic meant his family could not visit him in person. He wondered if he would leave the hospital walking, in a wheelchair or at all.
"When you're treating an extreme case like Marcelo's, the first priority is saving his life," Dr. Almeida said. "We had to stop believing in the statistics and start believing in the human being."
Due to the extreme risk of infection, the hospital staff kept Marcelo isolated in a protective enclosure around his bed for two and a half months. He was fed through a tube and could not speak or move. He tracked his progress by watching the nurses remove his bandages. Every removed dressing felt like a small step closer to home.
A doctor's unwavering commitment to healing
Surviving such an extreme trauma requires an exceptional medical team. Dr. Almeida coordinated a multidisciplinary group of surgeons, physiotherapists and nurses. He performed surgeries every 48 hours to remove necrotic tissue and clean wounds. In total, Marcelo underwent approximately 102 surgical procedures.
The recovery process tested Marcelo physically and emotionally. Dr. Almeida told Marcelo that giving up would mean he would never leave the hospital. Video calls from his family gave Marcelo the mental fortitude to keep pushing forward.
"I have to get out of this situation, whether I want to or not, I have to get out of this situation," Marcelo recalled. "If I don't have the will to improve, no one will do it for me."
How advanced wound care accelerated recovery
Managing burns across 85% of a patient's body also depends on innovative medical solutions. Dr. Almeida relied heavily on advanced therapies to give Marcelo a fighting chance. Negative pressure wound therapy from Solventum played a transformative role in this process.
The medical team used V.A.C. Therapy to help manage the extensive wounds, support new tissue granulation, remove excess fluids and create an environment to stimulate healing. At times, Marcelo had up to six devices operating on his body simultaneously.
"Using equipment that gives me confidence, the way Solventum's products do, brought me great reassurance,” Dr. Almeida noted. “Especially in cases where every single detail can mean the difference between life and death. That's why I chose Solventum,"
The therapy allowed for longer intervals between dressing changes, reducing Marcelo's pain and the need for frequent anesthesia. It also shortened the time required for his skin grafts to integrate successfully. Dr. Almeida believes that Solventum wound care dressings and other products also played an important role in his healing process. While access to V.A.C. Therapy in Brazil gave the medical team the practical support they needed to focus on saving his life.
Looking forward with immense gratitude
The first time the medical team removed his breathing tube and Marcelo regained consciousness, he was overwhelmed with emotion. He could only cry and express his profound gratitude to the people who saved him. He learned to appreciate the simple things he had lost.
"To be able to grab a glass of water to drink was a very important thing for me in those moments of despair," Marcelo shared.
He relied heavily on his inner strength and the compassionate support of his care team to keep moving forward. After eight grueling months, Marcelo finally received his discharge from the hospital. He continued with intensive physiotherapy and speech therapy to regain his strength.
Today, Marcelo is back at his job where he will soon celebrate 15 years of employment. “I'm healthy, my tests are good, I can move around, I can drive, I can study. So I think now is the time to continue with my goals,” he says.
Marcelo credits his survival to his faith, his family, his doctor and the medical technologies that aided his healing.
