Technical Brief

The recommended conditions for chemical sanitation of used membranes are: 1) a warm water flush using filtered water at 131 °F (55 °C) followed by 2) a static soak of the filter cartridges for 30 minutes in 0.5% v/v aqueous hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid based sanitizing agent solution at ambient temperature. Laboratory tests indicate that the 3M Purification Inc. LifeASSURE™ BNA & BDA membrane is compatible with dilute solutions (up to 1.0% v/v) of hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid based sanitation agents for up to 150 continuous hours at room temperature. Measurement of the forward flow diffusion during the tests indicated the forward flow integrity test (FFIT) values remained constant as a function of time of exposure to the sanitizing agent and remained well below the FFIT specification. No deterioration in the membrane flow characteristics as a function of the time of exposure were found.

Technical brief. Cleaning LifeASSURE(TM) BDA020 & BNA020 Series Membrane Filter Cartridges with Caustic Solutions. In malt or fruit based beverage applications where pre-filtration is used prior to the final membrane filter cartridges, the final membrane filter cartridges tend to plug by gradual constriction of the pores with deformable colloidal substances, not by the collection of particulate or microorganismson the membrane surface. The colloidal substances are composed of various naturally occurring organic materials that include betaglucans, proteins and tannins. These components are inherent in the malt or fruit, or are generated in upstream processes such as fermentationand the enzymatic breakdown of carbohydrates and other compounds. Regular flushing of the filter cartridge with warm 131 °F (55 °C) water can reduce this build up, remove the layer of these materials on the membrane surface, flush them from the fi lter cartridge matrix and increase the fi lter cartridge’s service life.
