Technical Brief

The integrity test is a non-destructive method for the End User to confirm the structural integrity of a LifeASSURE(TM) BNA045 or BNA065 series filter cartridge before and after use. An “in specification” result confirms the porosity of the filter cartridge membrane and that the filter cartridge is structurally integral. Three methods can be employed to integrity test hydrophilic (water wettable) LifeASSURE BNA045 and BNA065 series filter cartridges. These methods are: 1. Forward Flow Integrity Test (FFIT); 2. Bubble Point Test (BPT); 3. Pressure Hold Test (PHT) All three integrity tests can be performed manually or with the CUNOCheck™ 2 Automated Integrity Tester. For more information about using the CUNOCheck 2 tester to perform an integrity test, refer to the CUNOCheck 2 Operator Manual.

Technical Brief

The recommended conditions for chemical sanitation of used membranes are: 1) a warm water flush using filtered water at 131 °F (55 °C) followed by 2) a static soak of the filter cartridges for 30 minutes in 0.5% v/v aqueous hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid based sanitizing agent solution at ambient temperature. Laboratory tests indicate that the 3M Purification Inc. LifeASSURE™ BNA & BDA membrane is compatible with dilute solutions (up to 1.0% v/v) of hydrogen peroxide/peracetic acid based sanitation agents for up to 150 continuous hours at room temperature. Measurement of the forward flow diffusion during the tests indicated the forward flow integrity test (FFIT) values remained constant as a function of time of exposure to the sanitizing agent and remained well below the FFIT specification. No deterioration in the membrane flow characteristics as a function of the time of exposure were found.

Warm Water Regeneration Of Zeta PlusŽ Series and LifeASSUREŽ Series Filters

In many beverage applications, Zeta Plus™ series and, LifeASSURE™ series filters are eventually plugged not by particulate ormicroorganisms, but by deformable colloidal material inherent in the beverage. Typically, these are complexes including-glucans, proteins and tannins. Many beverage processors have found that including a warm water flush step in their daily filtration cycle reduces the build up of these colloidal plugging compounds in the pores of the filter, decreasing differential pressure build up. In effect, the warm water dissolves these compounds and flushes them from the filter matrix, resulting in greater filter service life and lower operating costs.
