Clinical Case: Using a Digitally Designed Matrix to Enable Additive Composite Dentistry for Teen Patients
Clinical Case: Using a Digitally Designed Matrix to Enable Additive Composite Dentistry for Teen Patients
January 10, 2023 | Dr. Adam Hodges
About the Case
A 14-year-old boy was referred to the practice by his orthodontist for esthetic and functional improvements to his smile. The patient’s upper anterior teeth were congenitally undersized (Bolten Discrepancy). The 3M™ Filtek™ Matrix was chosen due to the age of the patient and the conservative nature of this additive composite technique. While this would have been a very difficult case using traditional methods of composite placement, the 3M™ Filtek™ Matrix allows for the predictable, symmetrical restoration of a smile using a digitally designed, 3D printed custom matrix.
Trial fit of the 3D-printed custom 3M™ Filtek™ Matrix is performed to ensure proper fit.
After teeth cleaning, 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive and 3M™ Filtek™ Supreme Ultra Universal Restorative (B1B) are applied and light cured. Doors are opened in preparation for matrix removal.
