About the Case

68-year-old male patient wanted to replace old restorations on his upper incisors. Removal of the old composites revealed dark dentin which required masking to avoid color “shine through” in the final restoration.

Clinical appearance after removing the previous restorations.
Preparation
Selective enamel etch
After acid etching, 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive was applied, air dried and light cured using 3M™ Elipar™ DeepCure-L LED Curing Light.
A thin layer of 3M™ Filtek™ Universal Restorative Pink Opaquer (PO) was applied and light cured.
3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive
Results
An increment of 3M™ Filtek™ Universal Restorative, shade A4, was applied over the pink opaquer and light cured.
A final layer of 3M™ Filtek™ Universal Restorative, shade A2, was applied and light cured.
Application
Pre-polishing with 3M™ Sof-Lex Diamond Polishing System (beige spiral).
Final polish with 3M™ Sof-Lex Diamond Polishing System (pink spiral).
Final light cure
Final Result. Notice the PO shade is effective at hiding the dark substrate and the body that shades easily “neutralize” the pink opaquer.
