This year’s theme, Trusted Information, Smarter Decisions, Stronger Community, recognises the vital role Health Information Management (HIM) professionals play across Australia’s healthcare system and the impact they have on delivering better patient outcomes.
As we celebrate HIM Week from 17th to 21st August, we acknowledge this group of professionals who are integral to quality data, clinicians, patients, funding and systems. We also recognise that 2026 is a significant year of workforce transformation, with the go-live of the 360 Encompass™ System in a number of key sites across Australia. The 360 Encompass System combines artificial intelligence, computer-assisted clinical coding (CAC), clinical documentation integrity (CDI) and quality management capabilities to support health information professionals. My HIM journey
My journey in Health Information Management has been driven by a passion for improving healthcare through quality data and meaningful information. From leading Health Information Services, clinical coding teams, at both LHD and state level, to supporting healthcare organisations across Australia and New Zealand, I have been fortunate to witness the incredible evolution of our profession. One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been helping bridge the gap between clinical care, health information, and technology. Since joining Solventum, I have had the opportunity to support hospitals on their coding and documentation improvement journeys, work alongside talented HIM professionals, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions such as 3M™ 360 Encompass™. Looking back, I am proud to have been part of a profession that continues to adapt, innovate, and make a real difference to the healthcare system.
What HIM Week Means to Me
HIM Week is a celebration of a profession that often works behind the scenes but has an enormous impact on healthcare. It is a chance to recognise the dedication, expertise, and passion of HIM professionals who ensure that health information is accurate, accessible and meaningful. HIM Week is also about reflecting on how far our profession has come and the exciting opportunities ahead. From paper records to digital transformation, from manual coding processes to AI-powered technologies, HIM professionals have continually evolved while remaining focused on improving patient outcomes. I feel privileged to be part of this profession and excited about what the future holds for the next generation of HIM leaders.
