Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major burden on healthcare systems, providers and patients.⁷ Surgical site infections (SSIs) occur in up to 5% of all surgeries, affecting up to 65,000 Canadian patients annually.⁸ A likely source of contamination is the patient’s skin flora.⁹ Skin antisepsis is an important surgical infection control measure, which has been shown to reduce SSIs when part of an evidence-based bundle of prevention measures.⁸
